Vienna, SANA -Syria’s permanent representative to the United Nations and other international organizations in Vienna, Ambassador Hassan Khaddour said that what is taking place in Ukraine is the result of ignoring Russia’s legitimate security rights, with the continued flow of weapons and missiles into Ukraine without any calculations of the consequences for the security and stability of the region.
Khaddour’s remarks came during an extraordinary meeting held by board of governors of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in Vienna to discuss the situation in Ukraine on the security and safety of nuclear facilities.
Khaddour reiterated Syria’s support for Russia, underlining Russia’s right to defend itself and distance the threats to its people represented by the attempts of the United States and some Western countries to threaten its national security and target its stability.
The Ambassador pointed out to the United Nation’s archive which is full of historic evidences of the illegitimate Western interventions and acts of aggression by the US and its allies in the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) , to which millions of innocents fell victims , starting from the Korean War ,passing through the war in Vietnam, to Afghanistan ,Iraq, and Syria, not to mention its siege of the peoples of many countries in Latin America and others to undermine their national options.
He added that Russia is a responsible country and is aware of the importance of security and safety of basic and sensitive facilities and infrastructure in Ukraine, including nuclear facilities.
He called for taking into account that the assessment of IAEA Director General about the extent of the damage in those facilities confirmed that they were not damaged and that the level of radiation remained at the normal level.
The ambassador voiced hope that the IAEA would continue to carry out the tasks entrusted to it with full impartiality, independence, objectivity, professionalism and integrity, and would not fall victim to external pressures aimed at implementing political agendas targeting sovereign countries.
