Information Minister: Elections are genuine opportunity for Syrians to express their will

Damascus, (SANA) Minister of Information Omran al-Zoubi said that the presidential elections are a genuine opportunity for the Syrians to express their will and select their candidate for presidency.

In an interview on the Syrian TV late Sunday, Minister al-Zoubi said that the majority of Syrians are willing to participate in the ballots as they want security and stability back to their homeland.

He said elections’ day will witness a huge turnout in all provinces and there are delegations of many countries that will accompany the event in addition to more than 200 media outlets.

He said the plurality experience in Syria is the first of its kind and no one can dictate his will on any citizen, adding that elections are stemmed from the constitution and there is a higher judicial committee, comprising a number of judges, tasked with governing the voting process.

“No side can interfere in the work of the committee whether from inside or outside the country” he said.

Minister al-Zoubi added that Syrians would send, on June 3, a significant political and national massage to the whole world through a wide popular participation in the presidential elections which stresses wide-scale popular will to reject terrorism, bloodshed and destruction of their country.

“Counterterrorism should be a priority for any candidate who would win the post based on his awareness that winning the presidential post emerged from the popular will” the Minister stressed.

Al-Zoubi underlined that the countries which prevented holding presidential elections have committed a big mistake through violating the rules of the international conventions, particularly Vienna Convention on Relations and Optional Protocol on Disputes.

He asserted that the pretexts which some countries have recounted to prevent the Syrians from voting are unjustified and reflect these countries commitment to the policy of the US and the so-called “friends of Syria group” towards Syria.

On delaying the presidential elections proposed by some opposition powers, al-Zoubi said that presidential elections could not be delayed according to the Constitution, asserting that there is no legislative or executive authority that has the authorization to delay it.

He asserted that the government and the political leadership in Syria are opened at any dialogue, solutions and political tracks which lead to political outcomes to save the country.

He criticized the Lebanese Interior Ministry’s decision to prevent the displaced Syrians from returning to Lebanon if they returned to Syria as a violation of the international law.
