Maritime technical-vocational education supplies labor market with specialized cadres

Damascus, SANA- More than 350 students are having education in the Syrian Maritime Training and Qualification Academy in Lattakia which is affiliated to the Ministry of Transport.

The Academy, which was inaugurated in 2018, is considered a qualitative leap in terms of supplying the labor market in the maritime transport sector with academically qualified and specialized cadres.

Director General of the General Corporation for Maritime Training and Qualification Eng. Mohammad al-Ahmad told SANA in a statement that the study in the Academy is divided into two stages; the first one consists of four semesters in a period of two academic years, while the second stage includes practical training for one year, adding that this will be followed by a short training course before the final exams.

The academy includes three major specialties; the marine navigation, mechanical engineering and electronic technologies, al-Ahmad went on to say.

Due to the importance of the technical-vocational (tech-voc) education in the field of maritime transport as a promising and required labor market, a Maritime Transport High School was opened in Lattakia in 1988 and another school was opened in Tartous in 2014, according to Director of the technical-vocational education at the Transport Ministry Salman Subaiha.

Subaiha added that the vocational education in the schools includes five professions, mainly the marine mechanics, marine navigation and electricity Maritime, merchandise handling and maritime transport technology, asserting that more than 5,000 students have graduated from the two schools so far.
