Daraa, SANA – Terrorists affiliated to Jabhet al-Nusra on Wednesday demolished the shrine of al-Imam al-Nawawi in the city of Nawa in Daraa countryside.
A source at the province told SANA that terrorists dug up the shrine and detonated large amounts of explosives in it, which destroyed large segments of the monument. Jabhet al-Nusra pages on social networking sites said the act was prompted by a fatwa issued by their leaders.
Armed terrorist groups targeted religious monuments in several Syrian provinces, including the minaret of the Grand Umayyad Mosque in Aleppo, Khalid Bin Al-Walid Mosque and Um al-Zennar Church in Homs, Sheikh al-Rawi Tekkiye (hospice ) in Deir Ezzor, and the minaret of al-Omari Mosque in Daraa.
The Ministry of Religious Endowments (Awqaf) strongly condemned the terrorist attack, saying that its perpetrators seek to destroy Syria’s culture and history by targeting its holy sites.
