Lavrov stresses need to curb ISIS spread over vast swathes of Iraq and Syria

Moscow, SANA – Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov stressed the need to curb the spread of the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) terrorist organization and its control of large swathes of territory in Syria And Iraq.

“There are reports that [ISIS] emissaries have been sighted in Northern Afghanistan, which means they are closing in on Central Asia and, therefore, on the Russian borders,” Lavrov said in an interview with the Russian Kommersant newspaper published on Thursday.

It is important to take necessary measures to prevent the falling of new territories into ISIS hands, he added.

Lavrov warned again of previous information about the ISIS terrorists’ use of chemical weapons, saying that “Numerous evidence, which is scrutinized by international organizations at present, indicates they more than once have got access to warfare poisonous agents that could be equated to chemical weapons in terms of the aftermaths of their combat utilization.”

He considered some countries attempts to circumvent the principles of the UN Charter and impose their views on everyone else as posing a “serious threat” to international stability.

Meanwhile, Russian Foreign Ministry’s spokesman Alexander Lukashevich voiced Moscow’s doubt about the effectiveness of airstrikes carried out by the US-led international coalition against ISIS and its concern about ISIS’s growing capabilities in Iraq and Syria.
