Syria and Russia sign memo to restore Arc De Triomphe in Palmyra

Damascus, SANA- With the aim of restoring the Arc de Triomphe in the ancient city of Palmyra, the General Directorate of Antiquities and Museums signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the Association of Stone Industry in the Russian Federation to seek the help of Russian experts and specialists to restore this historical monument that was destroyed by “Daesh” terrorists in October 2015.

The MOU which was signed Friday by Assistant Director of Antiquities and Museums Nazeer Awad and Dmitriy Mediyantsev, President of the Russian Stone Industry Association, in the building of the Ministry of Culture, stipulates cooperation between the two parties in all aspects related to the restoration of Arc De Triumph in Palmyra and the completion of the archaeological studies and documentation work necessary before starting the restoration work in accordance with international technical and archeological standards .

During a meeting with the Russian delegation that comprises the project director Natalia Slovova, said that the (MOU) expresses the common desire between the two countries to strengthen cultural relations between them, noting the three-dimensional modeling project for Syrian archaeological remains, which is implemented in cooperation with the expertise of the Russian Federation Republic, in particular, is in favor of the strategic plan of the Ministry of Culture in documenting and digitizing the Syrian tangible and intangible heritage.

The Arc De Triomphe was built by the Roman Emperor Septimius Severus between the years 193 and 211 AD and is located at the beginning of the straight street in Palmyra.
