Tens of thousands protest in Europe against racism and brutality of US police

Damascus, SANA- Thousands of people protested in several European countries today against the racism and brutality of the American police, especially after the murder of George Floyd, an African American citizen, at the hands of the police in the American city of Minneapolis on the 25th of last May.

The Associated Press reported that protests took place in several British cities, including a demonstration in front of the American embassy in London, south of the River Thames.

Tens of thousands of people demonstrated on Saturday evening near the office of British Prime Minister Boris Johnson in Downing Street, central London, and clashed with police.

In Marseille, France’s second largest city, the police fired tear gas and pepper spray at the protestors, who in turn threw rocks and empty bottles at the police.

Similar protests were also organized throughout France, in which 23,000 people participated, condemning also the violations and racism by the French police.

In Spain, thousands of people in the cities of Barcelona and Madrid took to the streets in protest racism.

Thousands of protestors also gathered at the People’s Square in the Italian capital city of Rome. They held banners saying “The issue of the black lives … It is a white issue” and chanted slogans condemning racism.

In the German capital, Berlin, the police arrested 93 people who participated in protests in the Alexander Square, in which 15,000 people participated, in denunciation of the police racism.

The ongoing protests that spread throughout the world reflect the escalation of anger over the treatment of minorities by the police in America and Europe, which was sparked by the killing of Floyd.
