New York, SANA- Syria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Qusay Al-Dahhak underlined the important role of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) in providind support for the Palestinian people both in Palestinian occupied territory and in neighboring countries, including Syria.

Al-Dahhak was speaking during the UNRWA Pledging Conference 2024 held Friday by the UN General Assembly.

Al-Dahhak pointed out the huge challenges faces the UNRWA due to the genocide committed by the Israeli occupation against the Palestinian people, as well as the occupation authorities to eliminate the agency by depriving it of its financing and the deliberate targeting of its staff, the destruction of its headquarters and schools.

The Ambassador expressed condolences to the UNRWA Commissioner General and families of 195 staff members who lost their lives due to the savage Israeli aggression against Gaza.

He urged the donor states to provide the necessary funding to UNRWA in a rapid flexible and sustainable manner in order to continue providing support to the Palestinian people in their homeland and in host countries, including Syria.

For his part, UNRWA Commissioner-General Philippe Lazzarini · warned against attempts to dismantle the agency because of its role in protecting the rights of Palestine refugees.

Lazzarini said that Gaza is destroyed, and more than two million people are trapped in a hell having, been displaced repeatedly across a devastated area.
