Shurbaji: UN inability to implement its resolutions on ending Israeli occupation of the Golan threatens peace and security

New York, SANA- With a majority of 45 votes, the Economic and Social Council at the UN unanimously adopted a resolution condemning the social and economic repercussions of the Israeli occupation of the Syrian Golan and the Palestinian territories.

Delivering the statement of the Syrian Arab Republic’s permanent delegation to the UN at the Economic and Social Council, Second Secretary at the Syrian Permanent Delegation to the UN Roua Shurbaji said that the inability of the UN to implement the resolutions which are related to ending the Israeli occupation of the Syrian Golan poses a threat to the security and stability in the region and the world.

“My delegation of my country expresses appreciation of the report of the Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) issued in the document E/2019/72, and it expresses comfort over the relative improvement witnessed by the approach of preparing the report,” Shurbaji said.

She added that any real and effective monitoring of the Israeli violations with the aim of studying their economic and social repercussions on the livelihood of the Syrian citizens in the occupied Golan entails the continuation of the work on expanding the sources of information, updating data and defining a clear legal stance at the UN towards the Israeli occupation and its practices based on the relevant resolutions of the Security Council and the UN General Assembly.

Shurbaji added that the documentation presented by the report proves once again the discriminatory nature of the policies adopted by the Israeli occupation authorities against the Syrian citizens in the occupied Syrian Golan.

She reviewed a number of the illegal measures taken by the Israeli occupation such as carrying out the so-called” wind turbines project”, affirming that these practices represent a violation of the relevant international legitimacy resolutions.

Shurbaji expressed regret over the fact that those who prepared the report continued to ignore  the hostile policies adopted by the Israeli occupation against scores of the people of the occupied Syrian Golan.

She hailed the paragraph “121” of the report on the “strong adherence of the Syrians to their land, affirming that the resistance of the Syrians’ and their commitment to their Syrian Arab identity entails from the UN and the international community to take certain measures and steps that would support their right in ending the Israeli occupation  and putting an end to its illegal practices.

” Shedding light on the illegitimate Israeli practices, which as it was mentioned by the report of the Secretary – General cause humanitarian crises, demand moving the international and national efforts from focusing on the development to the immediate relief,” Shurbaji concluded by saying.
