Lavrov underlines importance of UNESCO participation in reconstruction of archeological sites in Syria

Moscow, SANA- Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov underlined the importance of the UNESCO participation in the reconstruction of the historical archeological sites in Syria which had been destroyed at the hands of terrorists.

Russia Today quoted Lavrov as saying during a meeting of the Russian Commission for UNESCO dedicated to the 65th anniversary of the country’s UNESCO membership as saying ” I hope that the UNESCO will participate effectively in the reconstruction of the World Heritage Sites which had been destroyed at the hands of terrorists similar to it is doing in Iraq.”

He indicated that his country will continue to participate in the main projects of the UNESCO, indicating that Russia seeks to member of  the World Heritage Committee as elections for members of the council will be held this year.

The armed terrorist organizations, particularly Daesh (ISIS) had inflicted heavy damages on many of the World Heritage Sites in Syria including the historical archeological monuments in Palmyra.
