Syria, Lebanon discuss enhancing agricultural relations

Damascus, SANA-Minister of Agriculture and Agrarian Reform Ahmad al-Qadiri discussed with his Lebanese counterpart Hasan al- Laqis means to develop the agricultural relations between the two countries.

During the meeting which was held on Tuesday at the building of the Ministry of Agriculture in Damascus, Minister al-Qadiri underlined the necessity of setting a joint vision on developing cooperation in all  agricultural domains between the two countries.

He added that the close cooperation between the Syrian and Lebanese ministries of  agriculture in the domain of the agricultural scientific research constitutes one of the bases of the Syrian and Lebanese agricultural production.

Al-Qadiri indicated that there are joint agreements between the two countries in the agricultural domain which aim at uniting the mechanisms of importation and registering the agricultural medicines, and protecting plants, in addition to the agricultural quarantine and pesticides.

He expressed readiness to supply the brotherly country of Lebanon with various types of saplings and to benefit from its experience in the agricultural domains.

For his part, Minister al-Laqis affirmed that the discussions during the meeting focused on means to enhance the agricultural relations between the two countries in a way that would serve the interests of farmers in both countries and would serve the process of importation and exportation via the Syrian ports and crossings.

He called for activating  and developing the agreements signed  between the two countries during the year 2010 which stopped during the terrorist war wage against Syria.

Later, al-Qadiri and al-Laqis signed the minutes of the meeting of the joint Syrian-Lebanese agricultural follow-up committee.

The minute stipulates for the Lebanese Agriculture Ministry to work towards reactivating agreements signed in 2010, as well as tasking joint committees with preparing MoUs and programs for agricultural cooperation.

The two sides agreed to form a joint committee for plant protection, scientific research and plant production.

Al-Laqis also met Minister of Economy and Foreign Trade Mohammad Samer al-Khalil.

The two sides discussing a number of issues, including means to devleop economic and agricultural relations between the two countries.

They also discussed issues of mutual interest to the two countries, particularly regarding exchanging products according to the crop calendar.
