Syria and Russia sign economic, commercial, scientific and technical cooperation protocol

Sochi, SANA – Activities of the 9th session of the Syrian-Russian Commission for Trade, Economic, Scientific, and Technical Cooperation concluded on Friday with the two sides signing the final protocol for cooperation in the aforementioned fields.

The session was headed by Syrian Minister of Finance Ismael Ismael and Russia’s Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Rogozin.

Rogozin said Russia supports the struggle of the Syrians and their right to protect their lands, adding that the Syrian people in turn support President Bashar al-Assad and that the situation in Syria is a clash with extremists under very difficult circumstances.

He stressed that Russia’s President Vladimir Putin has given directives to provide Syria with all sorts of support, especially in the fields of economy, commerce, and reconstruction.

For his part, Minister Ismael conveyed President al-Assad’s salutations to president Putin, expressing thanks to the Russian people and leadership for their support to Syria in the face of international terrorism which is supported by some regional and western countries.

The two sides signed the protocol that included an agreement on providing customs facilitations and a memo of understanding between the Syrian Economy Ministry and the Russian Economic Development Ministry.

In reply to SANA reporter question after the agreement –signing, , Rogozin stressed that the Russian people have always held the Syrian people in high regard, which made them empathize with their “tragedy” under the crisis.

“Syria has furthermore opted for Eurasian integration as a political course forward,” he added, indicating that the meeting takes on special importance as it underscores success in intensifying contacts between the two countries’ governments.

Speaking to SANA reporter in Moscow, Minister of Finance said the documents signed with the Russian part included several economic, investment and trade projects of which some are singled out as of paramount importance at the current stage, especially those that help prop up economy.

Syria’s Ambassador in Moscow Dr. Riyad Haddad said in a similar interview that convening the committee under the current conditions was “very sensitive and important that helped take bilateral relations to a new level.”
