Damascus, SANA – The Syrian Oriental Women Band performed a concert on Tuesday evening at al-Hamra Theater in Damascus.
The concert began with a selection of oriental maqam music, which a traditional Arabic musical style, with the musicians performing pieces by composers like Mohammad Abdelwahab and Riyad al-Senbati, in addition to performing old heritage pieces.
The band, which was formed in 2003, featured throughout its ten years a number of prominent and talented Syrian female musicians. Its current lineup consists of graduates and students at the Higher Institute for Music.
The band members are Dima Mawazini on the qanun, Razan Qassar on the violin, Rahab Azaar on the oud, Raghad haddad on the viola, Hadil Mirkhan on the cello, Sana’a Wahbeh on the contrabass, Dima Ayyash on the accordion, Khisab Khaled on the tambourine, Lina Shahin, Hamsa Munif, and vocalists Sylvie Sleiman and Inas Lattouf.
