UN General Assembly celebrates 70th anniversary of Universal Declaration of Human Rights with participation of Syria

New York, SANA- The UN General Assembly celebrated the 70th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) and the 25th anniversary of the Vienna Declaration and Program of Action through holding a number of official sessions and activities with the participation of the permanent delegation of the Syrian Arab Republic.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said in a statement on this occasion that the Universal Declaration of Human Rights represents the aspirations of peoples in every part of the world which has made it the most important document on the international level.

Guterres considered that the big challenge is to translate this declaration into reality lived by peoples all over the world.

Activities held on the level of the UN General Assembly included the a celebration for granting UN awards in the domain of human rights for the year 2018 to a number of international activists in this sphere.

Meanwhile, the permanent delegation of the Syrian Arab Republic participated in the high-level general meeting for marking the 20th anniversary of the Declaration on the Right and Responsibility of Individuals, Groups and Organs of Society to Promote and Protect Universally Recognized Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms.

Representative of the Syrian delegation made a statement in which he affirmed that some states are exploiting these noble concepts of human rights and the international instruments and mechanisms in this domain through using them as tools against some states.

He also referred to the double standards which don’t take into consideration human rights such as imposing unilateral coercive measures or justifying the continuation of occupation and its criminal practices in the occupied lands.
