Health Ministry, ICRC discuss cooperation in rehabilitating troubled health sector

Geneva, SANA-Health Minister Dr. Nizar Yazigi discussed with the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) President, Peter Maurer, in Geneva means of enhancing joint cooperation in rehabilitating terrorism-stricken health institutions and supplying them with medical equipment to be put back in the service of citizens.

The meeting took place on the sidelines of the 71st session of the World Health Assembly, the decision-making body of the World Health Organization (WHO).

Syria is taking part in the 71 World Health Assembly which kicked off last Monday in Geneva and lasts until Saturday.

During the meeting, the minister reviewed efforts to deliver medical services to those in need amid extensive damage wrought to the health sector as a result of terrorist attacks and the unilateral sanctions against the Syrian people.

The ministry is keen on full cooperation with the ICRC and streamlining the delivery procedures of medical assistance to the affected in all areas, the minister stressed.

The minister called for wide participation in the government’s efforts rehabilitate damaged health facilities with a view to make them available for citizens who returned to their liberated areas as soon as possible.

Maurer, for his part, vowed that the Assembly will do its utmost to support the health sector in Syria which he cited as among its top tasks.
