New York, SANA – Russia’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Vasily Nebenzya, expressed hope that the US and its allies would refrain from taking any unilateral action against Syria.
Nebenzya made his remarks following a closed-door UN Security Council’s meeting requested by Bolivia to discuss the US threats to attack Syria.
“The threat to international peace and security is a violation of the UN charter. We’re very concerned with the situation and this dangerous escalation. We hope that there will be no point of no return, that the US and their allies will refrain from military action against the sovereign state,” said Nebenzya, adding that the “immediate priority is to avert the danger of war.”
The Russian diplomat said that the US recent statements were “bellicose”, noting that “we cannot exclude any possibilities”.
He added that they know that the Russian troops are deployed in Syria, expressing hope that there would be serious dialogue to avoid any dangerous escalation of the events.
Nebenzya noted that Russia will call for an open UN Security Council meeting on Syria to be held soon with the participation of the UN Secretary-General.
For his part, Bolivia’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Sacha Sergio Llorenty Soliz, said that he called for a UNSC meeting after US threat of an attack on Syria without the Council’s approval, adding that any unilateral action against Syria should be considered “illegal” by all countries.
