New York, SANA-The Acting Charge d’ Affaires of Syria’s permanent delegation to the UN Munzer Munzer said Syria has honored the obligations pursuant to its accession to Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC) and those set forth in the UN Security Council resolution no. 2118.
Addressing a UN Security Council’s session dedicated to discuss Syria, Munzer said Syria’s cooperation in the chemical file came amid “major challenges and an intricate security situation” brought about by some regional and international states, hailing Syria’s disposal of its chemical program in a record time as an unprecedented achievement in the OPCW history, as confirmed in a report by the OPCW-UN Joint Mission on the elimination of Syrian chemical weapons.
Munzer criticized a policy of “deception and misinformation” led by the US, Britain and France designed to revive a legacy of colonialism and mandate and intended to hamper the Syrian army’s military wins against terrorist organizations and tarnish the Syrian government’s image.
As a case in point, Munzer cited ‘charades’ by the so-called White Helmets, a propaganda organization affiliated to Jabhat al-Nusra, of a purported use of chemical weapons in Eastern Ghouta as the Syrian army was making significant headway in the military operations in the area, a claim which was proved to be mere falsity.
Including but not limited to the White Helmets fabrications, a second series of lies played out at the UN Security Council by some member states who opted to remain locked in an “unprecedented state of denial”, blaming the Syrian government for Khan Sheikhoun incident despite the OPCW-UN Joint Investigative Mechanism’s conclusions vindicating it, Munzer added
The statements made by some states imply a covert instigation for certain organizations to use chemical weapons against civilians and fabricate evidences and witnesses, he said.
Munzer added that Syria has repeatedly condemned the use of chemical weapons or any other weapons of mass destruction as a crime against humanity, unacceptable and unjustified act under any condition.
He added that the Syrian government has also stressed that the Syrian Arab army had not used any chemical weapons since it does not possess such weapons, rather Syrian soldiers and civilians have been targets for terrorist organizations, particularly Daesh and Jabhat al-Nusra which used chemical weapons and toxic chemicals including chlorine gas within the framework of their criminal practices in Syria and the region.
The Syrian diplomat noted that Syria has sent more than 130 letters to the UN Security Council and its relevant committees revealing information about that terrorist groups possess, manufacture and use of toxic chemicals to which the Syrian government has not received any reply, not even a word about any possible measure that may be taken by the Council against states which helped these groups possess such materials and use them.
He expressed astonishment that some states still insist to consider themselves as the custodians of the future of peoples, meantime, their political and colonial history reveal flagrant human rights violations made by these states against all peoples.
Munzer wondered how could the US, Britain and France claim to be keen on achieving justice, while they have a long shameful record of ferocious aggression against people and infrastructure in Palestine, Iraq, Libya, Yemen, Afghanistan and Africa and previously in Vietnam, Cambodia, Cuba, Nicaragua and Grenada.
He indicated that the UN mission which visited Raqqa city few days ago to assess the humanitarian situation there found it completely destroyed due to airstrikes carried out by the so-called US-led international coalition warplanes.
Munzer said that the “International Partnership against Impunity for the Use of Chemical Weapons,” initiated by France is an attempt to bypass international legitimacy mechanisms and adopt a politicized mechanism that serves the agendas of states seeking to accuse the Syrian government at any cost and save the real perpetrators who used chemical weapons from punishment.
He reaffirmed Syria’s continued efforts to carry out all its obligations it has committed to when it joined the Chemical Weapons’ Convention (OPCW), adding that war on terrorism will not stop despite all attempts of political blackmail or exploitation of the innocents in Syria.
Munzer asked the Permanent Representative of the Netherlands to the UN why they have not yet provided sufficient and accurate information about the chemical materials and technologies aboard cargo plane which crashed in the outskirts of Amsterdam in 1992.
