2nd phase of National Program for Sustainable Development of Handicrafts kicks off in Damascus

Damascus, SANA- As part of its strategy to revive and protect traditional industries in Syria, the Ministry of Tourism launched the second phase of the National Program for Sustainable Development of Handicrafts at the Dama Rose Hotel in Damascus.

The Program is held in cooperation with the Syrian National Commission for the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).

Monday’s activities of the two-day event included seminars on creating a new generation of designers specialized in heritage crafts and promoting the Damascene decoration, wooden mosaic and painting on glass.

In turn, Tourism Minister Bishr Yazigi affirmed the importance of providing support to craftsmen and establishing new markets for traditional crafts in the provinces, adding that providing support to the craftsmen who were affected due to the terrorist war is an important part of the ministry’s work to promote their products.

The Program aims at reviving some of the endangered traditional crafts by training a new generation and innovating new methods for these crafts, the Minister said.

Last April, the Ministry of Tourism, in cooperation with UNESCO, launched training workshops on handicrafts endangered with extinction within the framework of the first phase of National Program for the Sustainable Development of Handicrafts. It aims at safeguarding the intangible cultural heritage and fostering these crafts.
