Moscow, SANA – The Russian President’s special representative for the Middle East and Africa, Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov discussed with Syrian Ambassador in Moscow Riyad Haddad the process of establishing de-escalation zones in Syria and preparations for the Astana talks.
The Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement that the two sides exchanged views objectively on the military and political situation in Syria, and that special attention was given to the establishment and effective operation of the de-escalation zones in Syria.
The ministry added that they also stressed that the process of establishing these areas allowed for a significant reduction in the level of tension and terrorist activity, and improving the humanitarian situation in Syria.
On a relevant note, Bogdanov told Al-Mayadeen channel during a reception hosted by the Iraqi Embassy in Moscow on the occasion of the liberation of Mosul that there are agreements under the Astana platform on the establishment of the four de-escalation areas, and that there is greater progress on some areas and perhaps less progress on other areas, but there is a hope that this work will be completed.
He considered that the establishment of de-escalation zones creates the conditions for the delivery of humanitarian aid and this provides the best conditions for political talks in Geneva.
