Lavrov: Moscow stresses importance to prevent future US strikes against Syria

Moscow, SANA – Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said on Wednesday that Moscow believes that it is important in principle not to allow new US strikes against Syria in the future, adding that a counter-terrorism front must be formed.

“Russia’s leadership has already voiced its principal assessments in this respect. We believe it is of principal importance to prevent risks of a repeat of such steps in the future,” Lavrov said during his meeting with US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson in Moscow.

Lavrov said that Moscow wants to understand the real intentions of the US administration.

“We are always in favor of collective steps,” Lavrov said. “We do not consider any closed alliances and misalliances productive.”

“It’s very important for us to understand the US position and real intentions of your administration. I hope to achieve progress on this path today,” the minister added.

“I will be frank that we have a lot of questions regarding very ambiguous as well as contradictory ideas regarding a whole plethora of bilateral and international agenda coming from Washington,” Lavrov said.

He stressed that it is “fundamentally important to prevent future US attacks on Syria.”

He pointed out that it is difficult for Moscow to receive Washington’s explanations on operational issues because “not all State Department positions have been filled” yet.
