UN calls for more support to the Humanitarian Response Plan for Syria

New York, SANA- The United Nations called for more funding of the Humanitarian Response Plan to help some 16 million Syrians who are in urgent need for health care support.

UN spokesman Stephen Dujarric said in a statement that “nearly 16 million people in Syria urgently need humanitarian health support, as health system remains under severe strain, essential medicines are in short supply, treatment costs are beyond the reach of many families and overcrowded shelters continue to heighten the risk of disease outbreaks”.

Dujarric reminded of the funding shortfalls for The Syria Humanitarian Response Plan that “requires $2 billion by the end of June to support 8 million of the most vulnerable people” and explained that “To date, it has received just $236 million – less than 12 per cent of the total needed”.

The UN spokesman explained that the organization, in cooperation with its partners, provides humanitarian aid to nearly 2.5 million people across Syria monthly, despite the sharp reduction in human financing by senior donors.

“1185 trucks carrying humanitarian aid crossed from Turkey to Syria since the beginning of the year, with a 6 -time more than the same period last year” that benefited more than a million people last May, Dujarric said.

The UN official added that “explosive remnants of war and unexploded ordnance pose a deadly and ongoing threat to civilians” in Syria.

Since 8 December, 2024, “more than 1,000 casualties have been reported – over 400 of them fatal and nearly 600 resulting in injuries – children accounting for over a third of the victims” he said.

Dujarric called for urgent support to expand risk education, professional clearance operations and assistance for survivors.
