Damascus, June 1 (SANA) Japan and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) on Monday emphasized the importance of private-sector development, job creation and regional integration in supporting Syria’s economic recovery during a business conference in Damascus.
Speaking at the First National Private Sector Dialogue Conference 2026, Japanese Chargé d’Affaires in Damascus Akihiro Tsuji said Japan supports dialogue with Syria’s private sector because sustainable recovery requires cooperation between businesses and state institutions.
Tsuji said Japan respects Syria’s ownership of its recovery process and remains committed to working with Syrian partners to promote employment, stability and economic recovery.
“A strong private sector is essential for creating jobs, revitalizing economic activity and supporting communities across Syria,” the ambassador said.

Acting UNDP Resident Representative Rouhi Afghani said the conference reflected efforts to advance a new phase of economic development in Syria and strengthen cooperation between public institutions and private businesses.
The conference, organized by the Ministry of Economy and Industry in cooperation with UNDP and in partnership with the Government of Japan, brings together government officials, business leaders and development partners to discuss investment, economic reform and the role of the private sector in Syria’s recovery.
He also stressed the importance of regional economic integration, describing it as a key component of building a stable and prosperous economy, and reaffirmed UNDP’s commitment to supporting Syria’s recovery and development efforts.
