Brussels, June 01 (SANA) The European Union on Monday called on Israel to stop its military escalation in Lebanon, including strikes on Beirut and the south of the country.
Speaking in Brussels, European Commission foreign affairs spokesperson Anouar El Anouni said the EU urges Israel to respect Lebanon’s sovereignty and territorial integrity and to engage in diplomatic efforts to de-escalate tensions.
He said the Lebanese population is facing “very significant challenges,” adding that “this is not their war, they did not choose this war,” and reaffirmed the EU’s solidarity with the Lebanese people.
El Anouni also said the EU continues to provide urgent support and assistance to help Lebanese authorities cope with the ongoing crisis.
Cross-border hostilities have continued since March, resulting in thousands of casualties, despite a ceasefire agreement reached in April that has remained subject to repeated violations.
