Riyadh/Amman, Aug 31(SANA) The Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) and Jordan on Monday strongly condemned an Iranian drone attack on the United Arab Emirates, calling it a violation of the UAE’s sovereignty and a dangerous escalation in the Gulf region.
GCC Secretary-General Jasem Mohamed Albudaiwi said in a statement published Monday on the council’s official website that “this aggression constitutes a dangerous escalation, a flagrant violation of the sovereignty, security, and stability of the UAE, as well as a direct threat to the safety of its citizens and residents.”
Albudaiwi said GCC member states stand united with the UAE against threats to its security, sovereignty and territorial integrity. He called on Iran to immediately halt the attacks and hostile acts and said Tehran bears responsibility for repercussions that could undermine regional security and stability.
Jordan’s Ministry of Foreign and Expatriates Affairs said in a statement Monday that the Iranian drone attack was a flagrant violation of UAE sovereignty and a threat to its security, stability and territorial integrity.
The ministry described the attack as a dangerous escalation and a breach of international law and the U.N. Charter, reiterating Jordan’s solidarity with the UAE and its support for measures taken to protect the country’s sovereignty, security, citizens and residents.
The UAE Defense Ministry said earlier Monday that its air defenses had intercepted a drone arriving from Iran over UAE territorial waters.
