Abu Dhabi, Aug. 8 (SANA) The United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Jordan and the Gulf Cooperation Council condemned the targeting of a vessel belonging to the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) while transiting the Strait of Hormuz, stressing that attacks on civilian vessels and facilities threaten maritime security and global energy supplies and violate international law.
The Emirates News Agency (WAM), quoting ADNOC, reported Saturday that one of the company’s vessels was targeted by a missile while transiting the Strait of Hormuz in the early hours of the day. No injuries were reported, and the company said the situation had been brought under control.
ADNOC urged the public to rely on official sources for information and avoid circulating rumors or unverified reports.
In a statement posted on the X platform, the UAE Foreign Ministry said the attack constituted a flagrant violation of UN Security Council Resolution 2817, stressing the importance of freedom of navigation and opposition to attacks on commercial vessels or disruption of international waterways.
The ministry described the targeting of commercial navigation and the use of the Strait of Hormuz as a tool of pressure or economic coercion as acts of piracy by Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, saying they posed a direct threat to regional stability and global energy security.
The UAE called for an immediate halt to attacks and hostilities and for the Strait of Hormuz to be fully and unconditionally reopened to strengthen regional security and global economic and trade stability.
Qatar, for its part, reiterated its categorical rejection of using the Strait of Hormuz as a tool of pressure and called for the waterway to be reopened without conditions, stressing that freedom of navigation through the vital waterway is an established principle that cannot be subject to bargaining.
The Qatari Foreign Ministry said continued disruption to navigation through the strait threatens the vital interests of regional states and the global economy. It expressed full solidarity with the UAE and support for measures taken by the country to protect its assets.
The Saudi Foreign Ministry also condemned the targeting of the Emirati vessel, saying it constituted an attack on the safety of maritime navigation and global energy supplies, and called for an immediate halt to such violations.
Jordan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates likewise condemned the attack, describing it as a violation of international law and a threat to the safety of maritime navigation, while reaffirming Jordan’s solidarity with the UAE.
GCC Secretary-General Jasem Mohamed al-budaiwi said targeting maritime navigation, vessels, facilities and civilian property represented an unacceptable escalation and a serious violation of international law. He called on the international community to assume its responsibilities and take a firm position to halt such attacks and prevent their recurrence.
ADNOC said Friday that 15 of its vessels had been targeted by missiles and drones while transiting the Strait of Hormuz since the start of the conflict, including three vessels this week. The company said the attacks had resulted in one death and 20 injuries among crew members.
The incident comes amid continued tensions in the Strait of Hormuz and disruptions to maritime traffic amid the ongoing regional escalation.
