Bern, June 22 (SANA) Qatar and Pakistan said Sunday that high-level talks between Iran and the United States in Switzerland had produced “positive and constructive” results, marking progress toward a potential final agreement.
In a joint statement cited by Qatar’s Foreign Ministry, the two countries said the first round of discussions, held at the Bürgenstock resort near Lucerne, led to the establishment of technical cooperation mechanisms and a high-level steering committee to oversee mediation efforts and the implementation of a previously signed memorandum of understanding.
The talks were held under Qatari-Pakistani mediation and involved representatives from Iran and the United States.
According to the statement, the newly formed steering committee has outlined a roadmap aimed at reaching a final agreement within 60 days and paving the way for a new phase of technical negotiations.
The parties also agreed to establish a direct communication channel to help prevent misunderstandings and ensure safe maritime navigation through the Strait of Hormuz.
The statement said Iran and the United States agreed to create a joint working group, facilitated by the mediators, to support compliance with commitments related to the cessation of military operations in Lebanon, as stipulated in the memorandum of understanding.
Technical discussions are expected to continue throughout the week at the Bürgenstock resort, focusing on unresolved issues, including Iran’s nuclear program and sanctions.
Qatar and Pakistan welcomed what they described as the constructive engagement shown by both Washington and Tehran, reaffirming their commitment to continuing mediation efforts aimed at achieving a comprehensive peaceful settlement. They also thanked regional and international partners for supporting the diplomatic process.
The announcement came following a round of U.S.-Iran negotiations in Geneva on Sunday, focusing on a range of regional and international issues, including Iran’s nuclear program and maritime security in the Strait of Hormuz.
On June 18, Iran and the United States signed a memorandum of understanding brokered by Pakistan covering several outstanding issues, including the cessation of military operations and guarantees for freedom of navigation through the strategic waterway.
