Washington, May 29 (SANA) The United States will impose new restrictions on Iranian airlines, including denying them access to airport services and fuel supplies, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said on Thursday, as Washington steps up pressure on Tehran.
In a post on social media platform X, Bessent said the measures would target two Iranian airlines and would include restrictions on airport access, refueling and ticket sales.
The announcement comes amid escalating tensions between Washington and Tehran over shipping and security in the Strait of Hormuz, a vital global oil transit route.
Bessent said exemptions would be made for flights carrying Iranian pilgrims traveling to Saudi Arabia for Hajj or Umrah, as well as for flights conducted for what he described as legitimate humanitarian purposes.
“Only a satisfactory outcome in the negotiations can end this cycle,” Bessent said, without providing further details.
On Wednesday, the US Treasury Department announced sanctions on a newly established Iranian agency that Washington says is responsible for collecting transit fees related to shipping through the Strait of Hormuz.
