Ankara, May 22 (SANA) Hospitals in Istanbul on Friday began treating activists injured during the interception of the “Global Sumud Flotilla,” whose members were detained by Israeli forces while attempting to deliver humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip.
The flotilla was intercepted in international waters during efforts to challenge the blockade on Gaza and transport relief supplies to the territory.
According to Türkiye’s Anadolu Agency, several activists suffered fractures and chest bruises following reported violence during detention, while others sustained injuries allegedly linked to electric shock abuse.
Some of the injured were transferred to Başakşehir Çam and Sakura City Hospital for treatment, while others were referred to forensic medicine centers in Istanbul for medical examinations and documentation of injuries.
Three Turkish Airlines flights carrying released activists arrived in Istanbul on Thursday.
Türkiye’s Foreign Ministry later announced the completion of the evacuation of 422 volunteers from the “Global Sumud Flotilla,” which was intercepted earlier this week.
The flotilla consisted of nearly 50 boats carrying 428 activists from 44 countries, all of whom were detained despite the humanitarian nature of their mission.
The incident drew strong international reactions, with several countries — including Spain, Canada, the Netherlands, France, Italy, Belgium and the United Kingdom — summoning Israeli diplomats to lodge formal protests.
