Geneva, May 4 (SANA) The United Nations human rights office said on Monday that Gaza is “the most dangerous place in the world for journalists,” citing the killing of about 300 media workers since the start of the Israeli war on the enclave.
In a post on X, the office urged countries to take action “beyond words of condemnation and solidarity” to ensure accountability, protect journalists and allow independent access for international media.
UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk said in a statement marking World Press Freedom Day that the war has become a “deadly trap for the media,” adding that most of those killed were local journalists.
He called on governments to investigate violations against journalists and hold those responsible accountable, noting that local reporters are often best placed to document events in conflict zones.
The Palestinian Journalists Syndicate said on Sunday that press freedom in Palestine remains under constant pressure due to ongoing Israeli violations and attacks.
World Press Freedom Day is observed annually on May 3, highlighting the importance of media freedom, the safety of journalists and the need to uphold independent reporting worldwide.
