New Delhi, Feb.21 (SANA) United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk has warned of the serious dangers posed by unregulated artificial intelligence, cautioning that it could slip beyond the control of its developers if they lack a deep understanding of ethical and social principles.

In an interview with UN News during the AI Impact Summit in New Delhi, India, Türk compared the situation to “Frankenstein’s monster,” saying developers may create something they are later unable to control. Without full awareness of the risks, he warned, AI could cause widespread disruption.

Türk stressed the urgent need for clear regulatory frameworks and called for mandatory human rights impact assessments for AI technologies, similar to safety requirements in the pharmaceutical industry, at the stages of design, deployment, and marketing.

His remarks follow the International AI Safety Report 2026, issued on February 3, which noted that AI systems could influence people’s ability to make informed decisions and act upon them.
