Algiers, March 29 (SANA) The Algerian presidency announced on Saturday that former president Liamine Zéroual had died in Algiers following a long illness.
A three-day national mourning period has been declared, with flags lowered across the country and at diplomatic missions abroad.
Born in Batna in 1941, Zéroual joined the National Liberation Army at the age of 16 and fought in Algeria’s war of independence against France.
He assumed the presidency in 1994 during a transitional period and was subsequently elected in the country’s first multi-party presidential vote in 1995. He served until 1999.
