Berlin, March. 30 (SANA) Minister of Energy Mohammad al-Bashir affirmed that the Syrian government has adopted an investment-oriented approach in the energy sector, describing it as one of the country’s most promising fields, with strategic projects already initiated since last year.
Speaking during the Syrian-German Forum held in Berlin on Monday, al-Bashir said the energy sector in Syria had sustained widespread destruction over the past years, at a time when much of the world was shifting toward renewable and clean energy.
He added that the Ministry of Energy has signed several major agreements, most notably a deal to generate 5,000 megawatts, alongside renewable energy projects—solar and wind—with a combined capacity of nearly 4,700 megawatts.
Al-Bashir noted that German companies have played a prominent role in these projects, led by Siemens.
He explained that around 2,000 megawatts will be generated through turbines manufactured by Siemens, whose current output in Syria stands at approximately 1,000 megawatts. Additional licensed and approved plants generate around 1,400 megawatts.
The minister further indicated that Siemens operates 103 low-voltage substations and six high-voltage substations across the country.
Al-Bashir revealed plans to expand cooperation with German firms through new agreements and memoranda of understanding, including one with Siemens to build a control and operation system for Syria’s electricity grid, as well as another with Knauf in the gypsum board manufacturing sector.
