Beirut, March 16 (SANA) The conflict in Lebanon escalated to its most perilous stage on Monday as the Israeli military announced the commencement of a ground incursion into Southern Lebanon across several strategic axes.
The National News Agency (NNA) reported that Israeli forces began their penetration through the western sector via the Labouneh hill, the Ramyeh axis, and the town of Mrouhin. Simultaneous incursions were recorded in the central sector, specifically targeting the directions of Aitaroun and Maroun al-Ras.
Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz confirmed the start of what he termed a “ground operation” in Southern Lebanon, though he withheld specific details regarding its ultimate scope or duration.
This ground offensive follows two weeks of intense Israeli airstrikes that have devastated the country. According to official Lebanese tallies, the aerial campaign has already resulted in the deaths of 886 people and left more than 2,000 injured.
The escalation began two weeks ago after Hezbollah targeted sites inside Israel, prompting a massive Israeli response. The subsequent raids have focused heavily on the southern suburbs of Beirut (Dahiyeh), as well as broad swathes of the South and the Bekaa Valley. Beyond the heavy human toll, the attacks have caused widespread destruction of infrastructure and private property, displacing thousands of civilians as the front lines move deeper into Lebanese territory.
