Kazan, May 14 (SANA) Syria took part in an Islamic World Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ICESCO) conference in the Russian city of Kazan on Wednesday, with discussions focusing on supporting education recovery across member states.
The conference brought together delegations from ICESCO member countries in the Republic of Tatarstan.
Syria was represented by Abdul Karim al-Qadri, secretary-general of the Syrian National Commission for Education, Science and Culture, who called for greater support for rebuilding Syria’s education sector through the rehabilitation of schools and educational institutions damaged by years of war.
Al-Qadri stressed the importance of cooperation with ICESCO and international partners to help establish a more sustainable and resilient education system in Syria.
He said investment in education remains a central element in the country’s recovery and reconstruction efforts and highlighted Syria’s historical role in education and culture across the Islamic world.
Al-Qadri also welcomed a trilateral strategic partnership agreement involving Syria, Azerbaijan and ICESCO aimed at rehabilitating 100 damaged schools in Syria and training educational staff.
He said the initiative reflects increasing regional and international support for Syria’s education recovery programmes.
During the conference, member states unanimously re-elected Salim bin Mohammed al-Malik as ICESCO director-general for a second term, citing efforts to expand the organization’s role in education, culture and science.
The conference comes amid broader regional and international initiatives to support educational and cultural recovery and strengthen cooperation among member states facing challenges in the education sector.
In February, Syria’s Ministry of Education signed the trilateral agreement with Azerbaijan’s Ministry of Science and Education and ICESCO during a ceremony held at the organization’s headquarters in Rabat. The agreement aims to support educational infrastructure in Syria.
