Cairo, SANA
Egypt has renewed its call for a Middle East free of nuclear weapons, stressing the need to ensure the peaceful nature of regional nuclear programs and full compliance with the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT). The statement comes as preparations are underway for the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) General Conference, scheduled to take place in Vienna from September 15 to 19.
In an official statement, the Egyptian Foreign Ministry emphasized the importance of all regional states joining the NPT without exception and subjecting their nuclear facilities to IAEA comprehensive safeguards agreements. Such measures, Cairo said, would strengthen transparency and reduce regional tensions.
Describing the establishment of a nuclear-weapon-free Middle East as a “strategic goal” that reflects Egypt’s longstanding commitment, the ministry recalled Cairo’s 1974 initiative at the United Nations to create a nuclear-free zone in the region.
Meanwhile, Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdel Aaty held talks with his counterparts in Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and Pakistan on coordinating efforts to address regional challenges and bolster security and stability.
This move comes as the international community prepares to deliberate sensitive nuclear security issues, with Egypt seeking to rally support for its initiative and push for tangible progress toward a nuclear-free Middle East.
