Damascus, June 5 (SANA) The Syrian National Physics Team achieved a strong performance at the KAI International Physics Olympiad (KAIPhO 2026), securing one silver medal and four bronze medals in a remote international competition held in mid-May under the auspices of Kazan National Research Technical University (KNRTU-KAI) in Russia.
The Commission for Excellence and Creativity announced in a statement received by SANA on Thursday that the Syrian team earned a total of five medals in the competition, which featured participation from students representing 15 countries.
The medal winners included Salman Youssef (Latakia), who won a silver medal, and Karim Abu Saeed (Sweida), Yehia Salloom (Damascus), Karim Abdulhamid (Latakia), and Ghadaq Qannas (Homs), who each secured bronze medals.
According to the commission, the Olympiad involved 109 students, including 16 members of the Syrian National Physics Team. The competition was conducted remotely using an electronic proctoring system in accordance with international standards.
Participants completed two theoretical rounds, each lasting five hours, featuring advanced physics problems designed to test high-level analytical and mathematical reasoning skills comparable to leading international competitions.
The Commission for Excellence and Creativity noted that one of the medal-winning students is enrolled at the National Center for the Outstanding, highlighting the center’s role in developing scientific talent.
It added that the results reflect the effectiveness of national training and qualification programs implemented through the Syrian Scientific Olympiad framework, emphasizing the ability of Syrian students to compete successfully in international scientific arenas.
In a related context, the commission recalled that Syria’s National Informatics Team recently secured one gold, one silver, and three bronze medals at the 2nd North African Olympiad in Informatics (NAOI 2026), marking another international achievement for Syrian students.
