Caracas, June 27 (SANA) The death toll from the two earthquakes that struck Venezuela last Wednesday has risen to 1,430, according to the country’s National Assembly, as rescue teams continue searching for survivors in the rubble.
National Assembly President Jorge Rodríguez said Saturday that the number of fatalities from the two consecutive quakes that shook the country last week had reached 1,430, with 3,200 others injured and 3,100 left homeless, according to Reuters.
The twin earthquakes, measuring 7.2 and 7.5 in magnitude, struck Venezuela on Wednesday evening. The first quake hit at 6:04 p.m. Eastern time, with a second, stronger quake following approximately 39 seconds later. The 7.5-magnitude tremor was the most forceful earthquake to strike Venezuela since 1900. A 4.9-magnitude aftershock struck Venezuela’s northern coast on Friday, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
