Mounzer: Only way to combat terrorism is to establish an effective international coalition

New York, SANA- The charge d’affaires interim of the permanent mission of the Syrian Arab Republic to the United Nations in New York, Minister Counselor Mounzer Mounzer, affirmed that the only way to fight terrorism is to establish an effective international coalition within the framework of international legitimacy and with the participation of relevant countries, on top of which the Syrian state which is the main party confronting terrorism in the region.

In his speech during an open discussion session held by the UN Security Council under the title of “Threats to International Peace and Security Caused by Terrorist Acts,” Mounzer said that any effort to combat terrorism will not be successful if it contradicts the provisions of the UN Charter and the principles of international law and if it’s carried out without prior coordination and full cooperation with the governments of the concerned countries.

The diplomat warned of the continuation of using terrorism by some states as a tool for their policy and the condoning of the practices of states which support terrorism, saying that all these acts hinder the international efforts to combat terrorism.

Mounzer noted that the attempt by some UN member states to justify their military intervention in Syria under the pretext of the fight against ISIS terrorist organization without coordination with the Syrian government represents a distortion of the provisions of the UN Charter and manipulation of international law.

He urged the UN to hold the governments of the countries which support terrorism accountable and compel them to cease their violations of international law and the UN charter, warning that failing to do so will send a wrong message of tolerance to terrorists and their supporters.

Mounzer called on the UN to address the hate speech, Takfiri and extremist thoughts, and misconceptions that have nothing to do with religions or human civilization.

He stressed on the necessity of coordinating the efforts that aim at confronting the phenomenon of foreign terrorists in Syria, noting that these foreign terrorists’ number exceeded tens of thousands, according to UN reports, adding that more than 30,000 terrorists from 115 countries have come to Syria to kill its people and destroy its civilization.

He also asserted the importance of drying up the financing sources of terrorism, including the direct financial support provided by some governments to terrorist organizations, in addition to tackling the trafficking of the illegal Syrian oil, products, looted archeological artifacts, and its cultural properties.

The diplomat voiced Syria’s rejection of the actions of the Washington-led alliance against ISIS which destroys oil fields and production facilities and other facilities and infrastructure, in addition to working to prevent terrorists from using communications technology such as the internet, television, and radio for the purpose of instigation, propaganda, and recruitment.

Mounzer also called for preventing terrorists from acquiring WMDs or means to produce and deploy it, stressing the need to hold the states which provide chemical weapons to terrorists in Syria accountable.

He pointed out to the documented Israeli support for terrorist groups affiliated with Al Qaeda and drew attention to the contradiction in implementing international law when it comes to combating terrorism, as the governments of Turkey, Saudi Arabia, and Qatar continue to provide all sorts of support to terrorists in blatant violation of international law.

Mounzer went on to summarize the crimes committed by terrorist organizations in Syria throughout the past five years, concluding by asserting that the UN is required to have honest will and determination to combat terrorism and hold its supporters accountable.
