Tehran, SANA – The Senior Advisor to Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Akbar Velayati asserted that the future of Syria’s President Bashar al-Assad could only be determined by the Syrian people and this was a “red line” for Tehran.
“The Syrian people must decide their own fate, and nobody outside Syria’s borders can choose for the Syrian people,” Velayati said in an interview with Iranian TV Channel 3 aired on Saturday.
He added that Iran will not leave President al-Assad alone on the battlefield or in the politics field, affirming Iran’s presence in the political negotiations on Syria.
On the visit paid by Russia’s president Vladimir Putin to Tehran, Velayati highlighted that President al-Assad and Hezbollah Secretary General Sayyed Hassan Nasallah were acquainted with the issues discussed by the Russian and Iranian sides.
