Damascus, SANA- The Egyptian authorities’ procedures on allowing ferries to cross from Tartous Port to the Egyptian ports to transport goods by refrigerated trucks to the other Arab countries eased the impacts of closure of Nassib border crossing on the exports, Chairman of the Board of Damascus Chamber of Commerce Ghassan al-Qalaa has said.
During a meeting between industrial and trade businessmen with Ministers of Industry Kamal Tomeh and Economy and Foreign Trade Humam al- Jazaeri and Director General of the Customs Majdi Hakmiyeh in Damascus on Sunday, Al-Qalaa called for the necessity of unifying efforts in serving the national economy on all levels and sectors.
Means of protecting national industry through prohibiting the import of similar products and meeting the needs of the local markets and combating smuggling operations were discussed during the meeting.
For his part, Chairman of the Exporters Union Mohammad al-Sawah said the national industrial production has increased during the last year which was reflected in the wide participation of the industrialists in the exhibitions held inside and outside the country.
The government’s current approach is to prevent importing any good that has an equivalent in the national industrial production and to support and protect the national industry by all possible means, Minister Taameh said.
Al-Jazaeri stressed that the inevitable decision of the government stipulates for protecting the local industry due to the ability of the imports to erode the prices of the local productions.
