Belarusian aircraft loaded with 40 tons of food arrives in Damascus

Damascus, SANA – A Belarusian aircraft loaded with 40 tons of food supplies arrived Wednesday in Damascus International Airport.

The supplies are a gift from the Belarusian people and government to the Syrian people.

Representatives of the Belarusian Ministry for Emergency Situations turned the supplies over to the Relief Subcommittee at Damascus Governorate and the Syrian Arab Red Crescent, who will later distribute them among displaced people in temporary housing centers and people affected by terrorism.

Belarus Ambassador in Damascus Alexander Ponomarev said this is the first shipment of aid which his country will provide to displaced people in Syria, lauding the excellent coordination with the Syrian government.

Ponomarev added that Belarus’ support to Syria isn’t limited to relief efforts; rather it supports Syria in fighting terrorism and extremism, noting that there are several joint projects in the fields of economy and local administration.

In turn, Damascus Governor Hussein Makhlouf said this gesture expressed the strong relations between the two countries, expressing satisfaction over Belarus’ desire to participate in reconstruction in Syria.

On a relevant note, Ponomarev and Makhlouf visited a temporary housing center in Herjalleh which houses around 263 families from the Ghouta area in Damascus Countryside, and talked to the people staying in it, with Ponomarev voicing his empathy with the Syrian people, especially those who lost loved ones.

Earlier last week, the 6th session of the Joint Syrian-Belarusian Economic Cooperation Committee was held in Minsk and its final protocol, which was signed Thursday, focused on increasing cooperation between the two countries in the trade, economic, industrial, technical, educational, medical and social services sectors
