Belarus says it seeks to increase trade exchange with Syria

Minsk, SANA – Belarusian Economy Minister Vladimir Zinovski said Syria is one of Belarus’s key political and economic partners in the Middle East region.

The convergence of the political attitudes of Belarus and Syria makes the foundations firm for developing bilateral cooperation in other domains, Zinovski added, during a meeting with a Syrian government delegation visiting the Belarusian capital Minsk.

Chaired by Industry Minister Kamal Eddin Tu’meh, the delegation is in Belarus to take part in the meetings of the Joint Syrian-Belarusian Economic Cooperation Committee.

Zinovski referred in the meeting to a decision which Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko issued last month to deliver humanitarian aid to Syria.

The aid delivery date is to be set in the coming period, he said.

The Belarusian Economy Minister said Minsk is working on diversifying its exports to Damascus and seeking to bring back trade exchange with it to the USD 85 million that were in 2008, and above if possible considering the current events in Syria.

For his part, Minister Tume’h hoped that the economic and trade cooperation with Belarus will be developed up to the level of the political one.

Tume’h called for establishing new joint projects that serve the interests of both countries and contribute to increasing the trade exchange.

He also wished that the Joint Committee will come out with setting up appropriate executive mechanism for cooperation and forming special technical committees to follow up on implementation of joint projects.
