Iraq’s FM: We back a political solution in Syria, seek to develop relations

Moscow, SANA – Iraq’s Foreign Minister Ibrahim al-Jaafari renewed on Friday Baghdad’s support for a political solution to settle the crisis in Syria.

Addressing in a lecture students of the Diplomatic Academy of the Russian Foreign Ministry in Moscow, al-Jaafari said Iraq has already asserted its position in support of solving the crisis in Syria peacefully.

Asked about the relationship between Baghdad and Damascus, al-Jaafari stressed that while his country does not interfere in the internal affairs of other countries, it wants to develop relations with any government in Syria that enjoys the Syrian people’s support.

Yesterday, the Iraqi Foreign Minister stressed that he and his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov shared views on the mechanisms to reach a solution in the region, whether in Syria, Yemen or Libya.

Both ministers, who were speaking during a joint press conference, stressed the need to adopt political solutions to avoid a war in the region, according to al-Jaafari, who is on a visit to the Russian capital.
