Iravani: Syria fulfilled its obligations under Chemical Weapons Convention

New York, SANA- Syria has fulfilled its obligations under the Chemical Weapons Convention, Iran’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Amir Saeid Iravani affirmed, stressing the need to abandon the politicization of this file and the exploitation of the Organization for Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) to achieve private goals.

Iravani’s remarks came in a meeting of the UN Security Council on the “chemical file” in Syria on Monday.

“Syria has fulfilled its obligations under the convention, and has continued to cooperate with the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons, and the Syrian government regularly submits monthly reports to the Director General of the organization,” Iravani was quoted by IRNA as saying.

The Iranian diplomat added that Tehran supports a constructive dialogue between Syria and the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemicals at the highest level, with setting a specific time frame for resolving the remaining issues and closing the file once and for all.

He pointed out that holding monthly meetings on the “chemical file” in Syria, despite the lack of developments, is not fruitful, as some member states of the Security Council repeat previous allegations against Syria.

Iravani considered that the political approach and double standards in the Syrian issue only lead to a deviation from the technical issues on the agenda of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons and prevent the remaining issues from being resolved.
