Al Rayyan /Qatar/, SANA- The national team of Iran stunned Wales on Friday with two goals in added time of their group stage match at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar to secure a 2-0 win.
Some minutes before the final whistle, Wales’ goalkeeper Wayne Hennessey was flashed with a Red Card after he had left the goalkeeping line and eventually collided with Iran’s striker Mehdi Taremi, who was on a rush to score a possible goal. The Red Card for the goalkeeper forced the Welsh team to play a man down for the rest of the match against the Iranians.
The teams finished the 90-minute match with all zeros on the scoreboard and the head referee of the game added nine minutes.
In the added time, it was Iran’s defensive midfielder Roozbeh Cheshmi, who netted a ball firing it from about 20 meters to give his team a 1-0 lead over the Welsh team.
Just minutes later, Cheshmi’s teammate Ramin Rezaeian scored another goal for Iran, leaving the scoreboard flashing 2-0 after the final whistle.
Today’s win was the third-ever victory for the Iranians at the quadrennial FIFA World Cup tournament. The Iranian football team previously appeared at FIFA World Cups in 1978, 1998, 2006, 2014 and 2018 and enjoyed wins over the United States in 1998 (2-1) and the team from Morocco in 2018 (1-0).
This is also the second appearance for the national team of Wales at the FIFA World Cup series. The Welsh team previously qualified for the World Cup in 1958, reaching the quarterfinals of the championship before losing to Brazil 1-0.
