Ambassador Sabbagh: Manipulating work rules within the United Nations is a consistent practice for the West to target countries that do not follow its political agendas

New York-Sana- Syria’s permanent representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Bassam Sabbagh, affirmed that exploiting the General Assembly to manipulate work rules within the international organisation and impose new, illegal and unprecedented mechanisms through pressure and blackmail has become a constant practice for Western countries to target member states that do not follow their political agendas, indicating that The escalation of the conflict between Russia and Ukraine came as a result of the West fuelling the Ukrainian extremist tendency and continuing to incite neo-Nazis and supplying them with weapons and various equipment, which has become a threat to the security of the region and the safety of its countries.

Sabbagh said in a statement on Monday during the emergency session of the General Assembly on “the situation in Ukraine: It has become clear that Western countries insist on strengthening the state of political polarisation within the United Nations and deepening the division among its member states by repeatedly calling for such purposeful meetings only to serve the hostile agenda of Western countries towards Russia, reiterating Syria’s stance that resolving regional and international disputes and crises should not take place through the practice of misinformation, policies of isolation, exclusion, imposition of sanctions, or through the establishment of politicized mechanisms, but rather through diplomacy and dialogue, and the need for the General Assembly to avoid any initiatives that may lead to exacerbation of the conflict.

Sabbagh pointed out that the draft resolution presented to the General Assembly today comes in the context of a series of unbalanced, biased and provocative decisions by which the United States of America and its Western allies are pushing to target Russia, which involves a dangerous state of hostility represented in the seizure of Russian sovereign funds and assets that they had previously frozen. And creating a precedent by establishing an illegitimate mechanism for compensation, in a clear departure from the mandate of the United Nations General Assembly.

Sabbagh indicated that the failure of all previous attempts to break Russia’s will push those countries to an additional means of blackmail against Russia by resorting to stealing its frozen funds within the framework of what they call a “compensation mechanism to compensate for damages, compensate for losses and help the Ukrainian people,” but its real goal is to pay the value of Ukraine’s purchases. The growing number of Western weapons.

Sabbagh emphasized that the policy of double standards pursued by Western countries led them to focus on specific issues that serve their agendas, and in turn ignore their responsibilities for their illegal actions that they committed during the past decades in a number of member states in Asia, Africa and Latin America, in an attempt to evade accountability for the grave damages. which it attached to those countries, including Syria, explaining that what those countries propose to establish such a mechanism is nothing but clear evidence proving the extent of the political hypocrisy it has reached.

Sabbagh pointed out that, based on Syria’s firm and firm position in rejecting all attempts to politicize and manipulate the work of the United Nations, it voted against the draft resolution presented to the General Assembly, calling on delegations of Member States to be aware of the dangers of being drawn into efforts to establish illegal and illegitimate mechanisms that are not consistent with the powers of the General Assembly. and the provisions of the United Nations Charter that will only lead to creating more chaos in international relations.
