Ershadi: US violates international law, UN Charter by supporting terrorists in northern Syria

New York, SANA- Iran’s Ambassador and Deputy Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Zahra Ershadi has affirmed that the United States is violating international law and the UN Charter through its continuous support for terrorist groups and the occupation of areas in northeastern Syria.

Ershadi’s remarks came in a speech during the UN Security Council meeting on political and humanitarian developments in Syria.

“It is necessary to provide humanitarian assistance to Syria, and political conditions should not prevent the delivery of humanitarian assistance to those in need… But this measure must be carried out with full respect for the sovereignty of this country, its territorial integrity and national unity,” Ershadi was quoted by Iranian Fars News Agency as saying.

She also called for the abolition of unilateral coercive measures against Syria, which impede the delivery of aid to the Syrian people and reconstruction.

With regard to the political process in Syria, Ershadi reiterated Iran’s firm and principled position, saying “The crisis in Syria must be resolved peacefully in accordance with the principles of international law, especially full respect for national sovereignty and the territorial integrity of countries… To achieve this goal, the occupation must be ended and full sovereignty restored to it over all its lands.”

Ershadi referred to the tripartite meeting of the presidents of Iran, Russia and Turkey within the framework of the Astana format in Tehran on the 28th of last July, in which the firm commitment to the sovereignty, independence, unity and territorial integrity of Syria was reaffirmed and they called for a stable political process under the leadership and sovereignty of the Syrian people based on UN Security Council resolutions.

Iran’s ambassador to the United Nations condemned the recent attacks by the Zionist entity on Syria and said that this entity continues to violate Syria’s sovereignty and territorial integrity and to carry out terrorist attacks against civilians and civilian infrastructure inside it.

She added, “Iran strongly condemns the continuation of these attacks and recognizes Syria’s legitimate right to respond on the basis of international law and the Charter of the United Nations, because the continuation of these criminal acts would lead to instability and escalation of tension in the region.”

Ershadi stressed the need for the Security Council to abandon double standards and to explicitly condemn the Israeli entity’s attacks and terrorist attacks on Syrian territory, which are a flagrant violation of the United Nations Charter and international laws.

Ershadi noted that Iran, as a responsible country, and in line with its international obligations, continues its efforts to support the Syrian government in the fight against terrorism.
