Health Ministry: 2020 is the year of confronting Coronavirus

Damascus, SANA-The national plan to deal with the Coronavirus and the application of precautionary measures to prevent its spread topped the list of work programs of the Ministry of Health during the year 2020, as the first local infection with the virus was recorded on the 22nd of last March and the first mortality on the 29th of the same month.

The ministry announced on February 6th a national plan that included a set of investigative measures and preventive measures to combat the virus and prevent from its spread.

The national plan of the ministry included the application of strict health measures at the border crossings to monitor the health status of travelers coming to Syria and monitor any suspected case, especially in light of the acceleration of the spread of Coronavirus globally.  In the second half of last February, the ministry started to apply a 14-day quarantine for all travelers coming from outside the country.

With the increase in the number of cases infected with the virus, the Ministry stressed the application of preventive measures, especially wearing masks, spatial distancing, sterilization, and the application of health methods when sneezing and coughing, which came in conjunction with the government team concerned with the strategy to deal with the Corona virus during the month of April, a set of decisions, including imposing a curfew from 6 PM to 6 AM in various provinces , in addition to imposing isolation in some areas that recorded more cases than others, namely; Ras Al Ma`rah in Yabroud, Al-Sayeda Zainab, Jdaidet Al-Fadl, and the town of Mnin in Damascus countryside while the investigation teams in various governorates to worked on investigating the spread of the virus, in order to gradually reduce these measures.

The number of people infected with Coronavirus increased during the months of July and August, to be the first peak of the spread, especially in Damascus and its countryside, which increased pressure on hospitals to treat cases, so that the infection trend would recede and the epidemiological situation became acceptable.

In October, the number of recorded infections in Corona increased again, as several governorates witnessed a new peak in the spread of the virus, and the number of recorded infections per day gradually increased to more than 150 cases preceded by the Ministry of Health announcing a state of full readiness in its various hospitals in the governorates, in addition to its status as an emergency hospital in the al-Faiha Stadium in Damascus and the launching of a campaign to strengthen the protection of health cadres  from infection with the virus, and to strictly wear means of protection for health workers who were  in direct contact with patients in the isolation departments.

The number of doctors who died during the current year as a result of infection in Corona until the tenth of this month, according to a previous statement by the Doctors Syndicate, to 48 ones in different governorates who were tested positive.

On November 18th , al-Tal National Hospital was inaugurated with a total cost estimated at one billion and 450 million Syrian pounds.

Health Cadres in Syria continued, in addition to performing their professional and humanitarian duty to treat Corona patients, conducting local research and studies to investigate the epidemic as they announced on in August the results of the first international Syrian study on (Covid 19), which proved that the Corona virus had not previously passed through the Syrian society.
