Syrian photographer awarded honorable mention at Tokyo Int’l Photography Competition

Tokyo, SANA – The Syrian expatriate photographer Hagoup Vanesian was awarded honorable mention in the Editorial – War/Conflict category for the winning entry “Challenge for Life” at Tokyo International Photography Competition.

In a statement to SANA, Vanesian talked about his participation in this international contest, noting that in his sequence of photos of a shoe repairer working inside a partly-destroyed house in the Old City of Aleppo, he tried to document the grave risks the Syrians were exposed to in order to survive this terrorist war, protect their children and provide them with their basic needs.

He said the photos convey a message of hope, adherence to the homeland and clinging to life despite the pains and the ferocious war waged on Syria as they also attempt to turn the spotlight on the suffering of Syrian people in Aleppo due to terrorism.

Hagoup Vanesian is born in 1970 in Aleppo. He started his career as a documentary photographer in 1999 and held several exhibitions in Aleppo, Damascus, Moscow and Hermitage Museum in Saint Petersburg.

In 2017, Moscow International Photography awards (MIFA) awarded Hagoup Vanesian in the competition with Honorable Mention in two categories: Editorial – War/Conflict for the winning entry “Determination to Survive”, and the People-Children category for the winning entry “Imitating”.
