Syria’s position firm and principled in rejecting the use of chemical weapons or any kind of WMD

New York, SANA_ Syria’s position is principled and firm in rejecting and condemning the use of chemical weapons or any kind of weapons of mass destruction, The Acting Charge d’Affaires of Syria’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations, Louai Fallouh has said.

In a statement to the UN Security Council’s open debate on the Non-Proliferation of Weapons of Mass Destruction on Wednesday, Fallouh affirmed that the most serious violation of the UNSC Resolution 1540 on the Non-Proliferation of Weapons of Mass Destruction is the continued support of the governments and intelligence agencies of some countries to the armed terrorist groups to the extent that those groups were provided with toxic chemicals to be used against civilians and military personnel.

He stressed that representatives of the same countries are now trying to deflect this important meeting by inserting topics that have nothing to do with the item under discussion in order to disperse efforts and prevent the Council from holding a real and serious discussion about the implementation of Resolution 1540 .

” The same countries opposed the Russian-Chinese draft resolution on countering the possession of chemical weapons by armed terrorist groups in Syria and Iraq, Fallouh said, adding that these countries themselves opposed Syria’s efforts with other countries to free the Middle East from weapons of mass destruction to protect the nuclear, chemical and biological arsenal of Israel.

He pointed out to the importance of this meeting in the light of the increased threats due to the possession of weapons of mass destruction or materials of manufacturing them by the armed terrorist groups.

Falouh said that the Syrian Government has repeatedly warned of the dangers of the armed terrorist groups’ possession of chemical weapons, mainly those linked with ISIS, Jabhat al-Nusra and al-Qaeda.

He emphasized that Syria has sent 108 letters to the Security Council, the 1540 Committee, the High Commissioner for Disarmament Affairs, the Joint Investigation Mechanism and the Security Council’s Counter-terrorism Committees in which it documented the involvement of governments of known countries in providing terrorist groups with toxic chemicals such as chlorine, mustard and sarin gas to be used against civilians.

In this regard, Fallouh referred to an incident of the involvement of the Turkish intelligence services in sending Libya’s toxic sarin to the terrorist groups in Syria in 2013.

He said that the statements and accusations fabricated in the past two days by Western officials and representatives of their governments are part of a cheap political and media war that has been always coincide with the Syrian army and its allies’ real achievements in the fight against terrorism and the intra-Syrian talks, whether in Astana or Geneva,  to hinder the Syrian government’s efforts to achieve a political solution among the Syrians without foreign interference.

Fallouh said that the Syrian government has repeatedly denied all allegations made by some Western circles and their tools about the use of toxic chemicals by Syrian official parties during the military operations between the Syrian army and terrorist groups.

He concluded by saying that, based on its commitments, the Syrian government fully cooperated  with all the requirements of the investigation conducted by international committees since 2014 so far and provided them with all the facilities needed for conducting  credible and impartial investigations.
